When to say “used to”

“Used to” can mean two different things in English:
  1. Something that is normal or unusual: “I’m used to walking to work.”
  2. something that happened regularly in the past, but no longer occurs: “I used to play basketball.”

2. Something that happened regularly in the past

Use the following formulation for this usage of “used to”: [subject] + [used to] + [verb basic form] I used to play basketball.
He used to teach at my school.
Note that we can also use “used to” to refer to the state of things in the past: This restaurant used to be an office building.
The United States used to export more automobiles.
My hair used to be very long.
